To be “filled” with the Spirit means to allow the Holy Spirit, already living inside you, to control your actions and reactions. God often uses contrasts in the Bible to teach us a truth.
Here we find God comparing drinking alcohol with the filling of the Spirit. We know the Bible teaches not to have “strong drink” that would control us. God does tell us, however, to let the Holy Spirit control us through His daily filling.
We have a choice each day as to who will be in charge— our flesh or God’s Spirit. A Christian controlled by God’s Spirit is evident because he will show the fruits of the Spirit, like love, kindness, patience, gentleness, goodness, etc.
