An angel speaks to Zechariah
Luke starts with an announcement of a miracle for Zechariah and Elizabeth. They will be having a son called John. They were an older couple who did not have children, which meant they endured public humiliation for a long time. Zechariah and Elizabeth were godly people. He was a priest in the temple and while fulfilling his duty an angel appeared to him. God’s plan was for their son to prepare the way for Jesus (Isaiah 40:3–8).
Zechariah heard the message and, not surprisingly, couldn’t fully grasp it. It was an overwhelming event. Because Zechariah didn’t believe, the angel caused him to be mute until John was born.
Interestingly we see that when Zechariah came out and couldn’t speak, the people knew he had seen a vision in the temple (v22), that God had acted. Amazing!
God has His perfect plan for each of us. It may seem too long. Our journey may contain difficulties, sadness, questioning, hurdles and wondering. Lean in to God and trust His promises as we serve Him.

“This Christmas season let’s remember that God’s promises are not like ours – fragile and sometimes forgotten – but are firm, fulfilled and forever. In every wrapped gift, flickering Christmas tree light and sung carol, may we see a reflection of the ultimate gift: Jesus, the righteous branch – our everlasting hope.” (The Promise of a Righteous Branch – Robbie Parkin)
