A Shepherd’s Christmas: A 5-Day Plan Through Luke's Account of the Birth of Christ

Day 2: The Shepherds Knew First

The shepherds were doing what they did every night: keeping watch over their flocks. Their hands were rough from work, their clothes simple, and their jobs repetitive. And then suddenly, their routine was interrupted. An angel appeared, and the night was filled with the glory of the Lord. Fear overwhelmed them.

The angel quickly reassured them, saying, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10 ESV). In the middle of their work, God broke in with his glory.

This moment is significant. God didn’t choose kings or priests to hear the announcement of Christ’s birth first. He chose shepherds—busy, ordinary people who were faithfully doing their jobs. And he chose to interrupt them at the busiest time of year, when sheep required constant care. Why? Because God wanted to show that his message was more important than their plans.

Sometimes we struggle with interruptions. Our schedules are full, and we don’t want to be disturbed. But what if the interruptions are divine? What if God wants to break into our ordinary lives with his extraordinary presence? The shepherds teach us that it’s always worth paying attention when God interrupts.

This Christmas season, we may feel pulled in a thousand directions. But like the shepherds, we are called to pause and listen for God’s voice. We are invited to let his glory shine into our hearts, even if it means setting aside our to-do lists.

Everything about that night was new and miraculous. God brought light into darkness, joy into fear, and hope into uncertainty. And he still does the same for us today.

The shepherds remind us that God chooses to reveal his glory to those willing to see it, even in unexpected places. Will you allow him to interrupt your holiday with his presence?

Reflection Questions:

  1. How might God want to interrupt your holiday season to reveal his presence?
  2. What has surprised you this year, and how did God use it to draw you closer to him?
  3. What ordinary part of your life might God want to make extraordinary?
