Finding Hope When Pregnancy Loss or Postnatal Challenges Are Expectedنموونە

My son’s prenatal diagnosis made my world spin. My perfectly crafted life—one that I had tried to stuff into the flawed mold of my understanding of a good life—was rudely shoved off course. I wanted to have the perfect family complete with a doting husband and at least two healthy children, and I wanted us to have a normal, happy, middle-class life. But my way was suffocating and selfish, limiting and lesser.
Unbeknownst to me, I had built my life on the faulty foundation of created things: spouse, children, friends, health, finances, etc. Though I loved Jesus, I hadn’t made Him my all. He was just one pillar that made up my multi-pillared foundation.
That is, until God began to shake things up.
Suddenly, my vision of a perfect pregnancy with two perfectly healthy babies who would complete our perfectly happy family was dashed. A scenario I could never have imagined became my waking nightmare. How could this be my reality? What was God doing? I couldn’t see how any good could come out of this horrid situation.
And yet God did have a plan.
Isaiah 55:8-9 says:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Little did I know that God was going to use this prenatal diagnosis for His glory, that He would use our painful journey to demonstrate His faithfulness and thereby bring hope and comfort to others. I couldn’t have known this outcome nor in my limited understanding would I have chosen the path He laid out for us, but I’m grateful that He ordained it by His sovereign will.
You see, through all the difficulties we encounter in this life, we can take comfort knowing “that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose,” (Rom. 8:28). He works in all things. Even the things that break our hearts, that bring out cries of grief, that try to steal our faith and quash our joy. He’ll use those things for our ultimate good as long as we humble ourselves and let Him. This process isn’t easy nor quick, but is well worth the effort.
I pray that the God of all comfort will comfort you today and ease the burden you carry as you place your trust in Him.
Questions:
Is the foundation of your life built firmly on Jesus, or is there an area you need to hand over to Him?
In what way could God be using your situation for either your good or the good of others?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you that You are working for my good through all the things I’m braving today. Help me to trust that Your ways are good and better than my way. Please comfort me and give me strength to endure. Amen.
