To The Ends of the Earth

The "greater works" Jesus spoke of do not imply that his followers would outperform or improve upon what he did. Nor will we ever minister independently of his presence. Therefore, the reason we’ll participate in greater works is that they’re a continuation of what the Lord began during his life. Only now, these works are being done through his followers.

The ongoing activity of Jesus in and through believers is observed even during moments of persecution. When the Lord appeared to Saul on the road to Damascus, Jesus asked him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” (Acts 9:4, ESV). Saul was persecuting Christians, but in doing so, he was also persecuting Jesus. Thus, regardless of our ministry or what we experience, “whoever believes” can participate in these greater works in varying degrees. So, what then is meant by “greater”?

When Jesus was on earth, he was limited geographically. Since the arrival of the Holy Spirit, the boundaries have been removed. As a result, the Lord can minister through each of his followers wherever they are, and the greater works can be advanced to every corner of the globe. What started in Jerusalem is now reaching to the ends of the earth, as promised (Isaiah 49:6, Matthew 24:14, Revelation 5:9).

Regardless of a person’s theology relative to spiritual gifts, there’s one thing that everyone can hopefully agree upon. The most important aspect of the “greater works” is that the good news of Christ makes its way around the world. While I don’t discount that healings, miracles, and deliverances occur today, and, at times, can result in opportunities for the gospel, there is a “great miracle.” The giving of life to the dead, as Jesus promised in John 5:21.

While the great work of advancing the gospel is central to the Christian mission, Jesus also
continues his work through additional ministries that make an impact on lives and society.
Greater works that "shine a light" among humanity so that the Father is glorified.

Reflection: How can you be part of these greater works in the place you live and work? How can you participate in the greater works happening around the world?

In John 5, after Jesus heals a man at the pool of Bethesda, he then declared that greater works would occur, causing people to be amazed. Over the next thirty days, this plan by Dr. P. J. Meduri from Taking the Field Ministries will explore the claims of Christ regarding these greater works. Works he continues today through his followers.
