Following God’s Leading
Have you ever had your well-crafted plans completely disrupted by circumstances beyond your control? Maybe a job opportunity vanished, a relationship ended unexpectedly, or a health crisis forced you to change direction. In moments like that, it’s easy to feel lost or disoriented. But what if those apparent detours aren’t setbacks—but God’s way of redirecting you toward something better?
Paul had a plan. He and his team intended to preach in Asia, and when that door closed, they tried to enter Bithynia. But both times, the Holy Spirit blocked the way. No explanation. No roadmap. Just a clear sense that the path they wanted to take was not the one God had for them. Then came the vision in Troas—a man from Macedonia pleading, “Come over and help us.” (Acts 16:9, NIV) That dream wasn’t just a change of direction; it was a turning point in Christian history. The gospel was about to cross from Asia into Europe for the first time. But Paul didn’t know that when he was staring at closed doors and different plans.
God’s guidance can feel frustrating in real time. Paul may have wondered: Why wouldn’t the Spirit let us preach in Asia? Aren’t there people there who need Jesus? Why not Bithynia? But God saw a bigger picture—one that stretched across continents and generations. What felt like divine roadblocks were actually divine redirections.
This is how God often works in our lives. When a door suddenly shuts, when our plans are rearranged, or when obstacles arise that we didn’t see coming, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re off course. In fact, it might mean God is steering us toward something far more significant than we could have imagined. The job that slipped away, the move you didn’t want, the opportunity that vanished—these could all be setups for divine assignments you haven’t yet seen. The challenge is trusting His timing when His redirections feel like rejections.
Because Paul was willing to adjust his plans and stay sensitive to the Spirit’s leading, he ended up meeting Lydia and planting the first church in Europe. His flexibility in the face of frustration created space for God to do something extraordinary.
You may be in a season right now where things aren’t going according to plan. If so, pause and ask: Could this be God’s redirection? Instead of resisting what feels like a detour, consider that it may be God’s way of positioning you for your greatest ministry impact. When we trust His navigation more than our own map, we open ourselves to divine possibilities far beyond our own designs.
Reflection Questions:
- How do you typically respond when your plans are disrupted—with frustration or with faith-filled expectation?
- What closed doors in your life right now might actually be God’s way of redirecting you toward something greater?
Prayer:
Lord, help me follow Your leading, even when I don’t understand the path. Give me a willing heart to embrace Your redirections and trust that You are guiding me toward something good. Teach me to value Your plan above my own. Amen.
