Living Faith Today
Standing in the Fire
Stephen’s life reminds us that faith is not always safe. Chosen as one of the first deacons, he served the early church with humility and courage. When confronted by the religious leaders, he spoke boldly, proclaiming the truth of Jesus even when it meant risking everything. Anger surged against him, and they dragged him outside the city to stone him. Yet in the midst of pain, Stephen lifted his eyes and saw Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father, welcoming him home. His bravery became a spark, igniting the courage of the early church. His life reminds us that obedience to Christ is worth more than comfort or safety.
Centuries later, Archbishop Desmond Tutu faced a different kind of fire. In apartheid South Africa, surrounded by injustice, hatred, and oppression, he refused to remain silent. His faith compelled him to speak truth, advocate for reconciliation, and work tirelessly for peace. Like Stephen, Tutu drew strength not from himself but from the conviction that God's justice and mercy would prevail. His life demonstrates that the flames of systemic injustice are not extinguished by fear, but by courage rooted in Christ.
Even outside public or historical heroism, we are called to stand in fires of a quieter kind. I recall a time when I was pressured to promise results I couldn't deliver. The expectation was heavy, and the pressure intense. Instead of giving in or saying what others wanted to hear, I chose to be honest. I acknowledged what I could realistically achieve and then worked diligently, relying on God for guidance. He gave me ideas, solutions, and insights that only He could provide. Through prayer, effort, and faithfulness, what initially seemed impossible began to take shape. God honoured that courage and creativity, turning a challenging situation into an opportunity for growth and testimony.
Standing in the fire is not only about dramatic moments of confrontation but also about choosing integrity, perseverance, and faithfulness in everyday challenges. Stephen's courage, Tutu's advocacy, and the quiet fires we face converge on one truth: obedience often requires discomfort, risk, or hard work, yet Christ walks with us. The fire is never meant to destroy but to refine. It shapes hearts, strengthens faith, and reveals God’s glory in ways far beyond what we could imagine.
Reflection Question
What does "standing in the fire" look like in your life today? How can you fix your eyes on Jesus in the middle of it?
Prayer
Lord, give me courage to stand in the fire with faith and obedience. When trials press in, remind me that You are with me and that Your glory is greater than my fear. Let my life reflect Your truth and love, even when it costs me.
