Daily Encouragement

This is part of one of the apostle’s marvellous prayers. Here he asks not only that Christ may dwell in our hearts but also that we may know the love that surpasses knowledge and be filled “to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

We are reminded at the outset that we need strength from the Father through the Spirit in order to experience these blessings. Apart from him we cannot only do nothing, we can receive nothing. Comments E. K. Simpson, “Enduement is the primary pre-requisite to the science of measuring the immeasurable to which he bids them aspire.”

The hungry soul fearful of any counterfeit experiences is on safe ground here. Let us be bold to echo the apostle’s prayer, “so that” we may experience what the Lord has for us. There is the fact that God’s ability is beyond our imagining and the thought that “his power . . . is at work within us” (verse 20). There is the help of “all the saints” (verse 18) - for example, the blessing of their fellowship, the record of their experiences, the inspiration of their hymns. And there is our faith. Commenting on the words, “through faith,” Bishop Moule writes, “Take fullest notice of that phrase so strong in its simplicity.”
