Resurrection

AD 30

Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

~ Before the resurrection, Roman soldiers guarded the dead body of Jesus.

And now the completion of our glorious salvation—God’s gift of life to the full…

Early on the first day of the week, the world lay in silence.

Jesus’ body was sealed in the tomb, His followers’ hopes buried with Him.

Suddenly, life entered Jesus’ lifeless form and death itself was shattered.

There was a violent earthquake as an angel with clothes like lightning rolled back the stone and sat on it. The guards were so afraid that they became like dead men.

The women came with grief, but instead found an empty tomb and angels proclaiming, “He is not here, but has risen!” (Luke 24:6)

Mary wept until she heard her name spoken by the risen Jesus.

Peter and John ran to the tomb, saw the folded grave clothes, and marveled.

And Jesus appeared before His Father’s throne with His own blood—the full payment for our sins.

~ After the resurrection, Jesus proved He was alive by appearing to His disciples.

Significance

  • A mystery… We were there. We were raised to life in Jesus’ resurrection and seated with Him in the heavenly realms. (Eph. 2:6)
  • Because Jesus died for us and rose from the dead, we are forgiven and reconciled (Col. 1:21–22), free from condemnation (Rom. 8:1), children of God (John 1:12), and are at peace with Him (Rom. 5:1).
  • We all hate death and many fear it (Heb. 2:14–15). Let us rejoice! Jesus now holds the keys to death and the grave (Rev. 1:17–18).
