Reimagine Boldness Through the Lives of Peter & John

Bold Witness in Word and Action

Have you ever softened the truth about Jesus out of fear? Maybe you’ve felt tempted to avoid topics like sin, repentance, or the exclusive claims of Christ. But what if softening the gospel actually drains it of its power?

In Acts 3, after Peter and John healed a man lame from birth, a crowd gathered in amazement. Peter didn’t waste the moment. He spoke boldly: “You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead.” (Acts 3:15, NIV) Yet he also offered hope: “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out.” (Acts 3:19, NIV).

Having experienced Jesus himself, he couldn’t help but speak of Him. And when truth is delivered in love, it carries weight that half-truths never can.

His boldness was tested immediately. Peter and John were arrested and brought before the same council that had condemned Jesus. The pressure to backpedal must have been intense—but Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, stood firm: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12, NIV)

Boldness doesn’t mean being abrasive. It means being so anchored in truth that no pressure can shake you. Peter and John had seen the risen Christ. Nothing could silence what they knew to be true.

Today, our challenges may not involve prison, but the pressure is real—social media backlash, workplace tension, cultural pushback. It’s tempting to water down the message. But people don’t need a polished version of the gospel—they need the real thing. The full truth is what brings true hope.

Peter’s courage came from the Holy Spirit. His boldness wasn’t about personality—it was about conviction rooted in personal experience. The same Spirit empowers us. When we’ve been changed by grace, we can speak with clarity and compassion.

We don’t have to choose between love and truth. The gospel is both. When we share it boldly and lovingly, God uses it to change lives. So don’t shy away. Speak the truth, point to the hope, and trust that Jesus still saves.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which truths about the gospel are you most tempted to avoid when they’re unpopular?
  2. How can you deepen your convictions so you’re ready to speak with boldness and grace?

Prayer:
God, give me Peter’s courage to speak truth in love. Anchor me in Your gospel so nothing shakes my convictions. Fill me with Your Spirit, and help me share both the problem and the hope with clarity and compassion. Amen.
