Where Are You, God? 30 First Encounters With Godنموونە

Day 7: David - The Shepherd King
Have you ever been overlooked? Forgotten when important decisions were being made? David knew that feeling—when the prophet Samuel came to anoint Israel's next king, David wasn't even invited to the ceremony.
Samuel arrived at Jesse's house with a divine mission: anoint one of his sons as the future king. Jesse proudly paraded seven sons before the prophet—all tall, strong, and impressive. Each one looked like king material. Yet God rejected them all, telling Samuel: "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7)
The Forgotten Son
"Are these all the sons you have?" Samuel asked. Almost as an afterthought, Jesse mentioned David—the youngest, out tending sheep, not even considered worthy of the gathering. But when David arrived, still smelling of the pasture, God spoke: "Rise and anoint him; this is the one." (1 Samuel 16:12).
God's Different Standards
While his family saw a shepherd boy, God saw a heart after His own heart. David—youngest, smallest, overlooked by his own family—was chosen to lead a nation. The oil was poured, and the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward.
From Pasture to Promise
Those years faithfully tending sheep weren't wasted time—they were preparation. Fighting lions and bears equipped David to face a giant called Goliath. Learning to trust God in small things prepared him for leading armies. God develops leaders in hidden places before giving them public platforms.
The Eternal Covenant
Years later, when David wanted to build God a house, God made an astounding promise: "I will build you a house... Your throne will be established forever" (2 Samuel 7:16). This wasn't just about David's immediate descendants—it pointed to the ultimate King, Jesus, who would be called "Son of David" throughout the Gospels.
Your Shepherd's Staff
God is still looking at hearts, not appearances. What seems like insignificant preparation in your life may be exactly what God is using to ready you for His purposes. The same God who saw potential in a forgotten shepherd boy sees it in you.
The shepherd's staff that guided sheep would become the scepter that ruled nations. God's kingdom often begins in the most unlikely places, with the most unlikely people—including you. What is He calling you to today?
