Nicole introduces this lesson in which we’ll witness tension between two brothers that extends to a family feud between their descendants, and how God intervenes when one brother takes advantage of another.

Obadiah: In the Text

Obadiah is about a relationship between “brothers” that was deeply dysfunctional. It goes back to the tension between two brothers way back in the book of Genesis.

Symbol for Obadiah

Obadiah warns the Edomites directly with his prophecy. Edom had established itself in the rock city of Petra. Obadiah compares them to an eagle nesting safely in the clefts of a rock. Because Edom was cruel to Israel, Obadiah prophesies a time when Edom will be thrown down and crushed by YHWH. Edom’s lands will be forfeited to Israel, who will be established by God in the security Edom once enjoyed in high places.

“The pride of your heart has deceived you,

you who live in the clefts of the rocks

and make your home on the heights,

you who say to yourself,

‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’

Though you soar like the eagle

and make your nest among the stars,

from there I will bring you down,”
