God of the in Between

In the last part of the story, we see Jesus reminding the disciples of something. Luke 8 tells us that after he calmed the storm, Jesus asked his disciples, “Where is your faith?”

It’s as though he was saying, “Friends, I said we’re going to the other side. So, where does that mean we’re going? You literally just watched me cast out demons and cure diseases. Nothing is impossible. No wind, no lightning, no storm will ever change that. So, where is your faith? Is it in the truth of the storm around you, or is it in the fact and in the promise of the unchanging, life-giving, powerful & true Word of God?”

I’m imagining Him rephrasing that for us today. “Child, the Word says you can do all things because I’ll give you strength. The Word says all things work together for the good. The Word says I want you to have a full and everlasting life with joy and peace. And nothing is impossible. No wind, no lightning, no storm will ever change that. So, where is your faith? Is it in the truth of the storm around you, or is it in the fact and in the promise of the unchanging, life-giving, powerful & true Word of God?”

This is the God who loves you and who has equipped you for what you’re facing. He promises never to let us experience more than what we can handle. This is the God who loves you and doesn’t chastise you for feeling the rain of tears on your face or the blow of a recent disappointment. When our eyes see only the lightning, when our ears hear only the thunder, and when our minds imagine only the worst, God reminds us in 1 Corinthians 2:9, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”

God of the in Between

Between jobs. Between relationships. Between the teenage years and adulthood. Between parenthood and an empty nest. Between where you want to be and where you are now. Or maybe you’re smack in between the prayer and the answer. No matter what the “in between” looks like for you, God is there. A God who loves without leaving. A God who empowers and equips. And, a God who is in the in between.
