LAMBS AMONG WOLVES
“The harvest is plentiful,” said Jesus, “but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves” (Luke 10:2-3, NIV).
In so many places around the world, I have witnessed “wolves” ravaging “lambs.” And I understand what it feels like to walk into a place, knowing I am being sent in as a lamb. But that is exactly when I have been able to experience the triumph of the Lion of Judah!
Here’s an example.
I have a notation in the margin of my Bible next to Isaiah 43. In my own handwriting, the notation says, “Will I die tonight or tomorrow?”
It was November 23, 1996, and I was in Bunia, Congo. Warfare was raging in the area. I was inside a house with a couple of colleagues—Curtis and Mike—while the sound of gunfire went on outside. We were held prisoner by armed men at the door.
The three of us had written letters to our wives, making a pact that if any one of us was able to get out, he would take the letters back and deliver them to each home. Now we were sitting around the kitchen table, praying and reading Scripture out loud to one another. We were able to draw strength from God’s Word, reminding ourselves that so many of His faithful followers had experienced threats while He protected them.
Here are some of the verses from Isaiah 43 that meant so much to me in those hours:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze. (vv. 1-2, NIV)
Scripture is clear that hardship and even martyrdom can be God’s answer sometimes. But so can mercy.
What enemies are threatening you today? Spend some time meditating on Isaiah 43 in light of the attack you are experiencing.
