EquipHer Vol. 26: "How to Break the Cycle of Self-Sabotage"نموونە

Day 2 – Replace The Lies
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV)
To demolish is a strong action. It does not mean to lightly adjust or patch something up. It means to tear down, to bring to the ground, to strip something of the authority and space it has wrongly taken. This is the language Paul uses to describe how we should treat thoughts that oppose the truth of God’s Word— strongholds that must be torn down. We need to recognize that some ideas, when left unchecked, become just that—rigid walls rising between us and the truth of God.
The cycle of self-sabotage lives inside those very strongholds. It is built on phrases like, “I cannot change,” “I will always fall behind,”“I am not enough to be used by God.” These are not just insecurities, they are lies rising up against the knowledge of God, and when we believe them, we become prisoners of our own thoughts.
2 Corinthians 10:5 calls us to an intentional and ongoing practice: to demolish, to take captive, lead in obedience, and learn how to discern what aligns with God’s truth and what does not. God’s voice brings freedom, encouragement, and strength. The voice of self-sabotage brings accusation, paralysis, and shame. They cannot coexist: one must be chosen, and the other must be torn down.
If we look at the story of Sarah (Genesis 18:10–15), who was given a promise from God that defied all logic (bearing a child in her nineties), and her response was laughter. Sarcastic, weary laughter shaped by a lie that might sound familiar to us too: “It is too late for me.” But God, in His faithfulness, responds with truth: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14, NIV) Sarah is not condemned for her fragility. She is met in her unbelief. The lie that held her heart captive is disarmed by God’s unwavering faithfulness.
The lies we have carried are not too strong for God, and only the Truth of His Word has the power to demolish them.
Reflective Questions:
- What is one lie you have believed for so long that it almost feels like truth?
- In which areas of your life do you sense that lie still holds influence?
- What is God’s truth speaking over that specific area today?
Prayer:
Lord, show me the lies that have been built in my mind. Help me to see them for what they are: lies keeping me away from You. Give me discernment to recognize truth, and strength to demolish every thought that does not honor You. Let my mind become fertile ground for Your voice and Your promises. Amen.

Self-sabotage is subtle. It convinces us that we are weak or flawed for what God has planned for us, but the truth is, we are called to live with a renewed mind—anchored in the Word of God. Through this devotional, we will explore how to recognize and confront forms of self-sabotage and align our identity in Christ.
