The Generosity of the Father

Are you asking boldly, knowing you’re praying to a generous God?

When Jesus teaches us to ask for bread, he’s not pointing us to a reluctant provider. He’s pointing us to a generous Father. In Luke 11:11–13 (NIV), after teaching the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus says, “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?..."

Jesus knew we’d sometimes hesitate to ask. We’re taught to earn, prove, and perform. But Jesus flips that thinking. He reminds us that the Father delights to give. He isn’t stingy. He’s not withholding. His heart is generous and kind.

This doesn’t mean we always get what we ask for, but it does mean we are always heard. When we pray, we’re not presenting a wishlist to a boss. We’re entering a conversation with a Father who knows what is best and gives with wisdom and love.

So ask boldly. Trust his heart. And remember that the most generous gift of all is not something, but someone—the Holy Spirit, God’s presence with us in every moment.

Prayer:
God, thank you that you are generous and kind. Help me come to you boldly, not hesitantly. I believe you love to give good gifts to your children. Align my heart with yours and help me trust in your wisdom and timing.
