Overview of Philemon: Behind the Text

Philemon was surrounded by Roman institutions, including slavery, but he was also in a home-church where a new-family ethic provided believers a primary identity as kin.

Paul uses the Roman form of appeal and benefaction, including words of commendation, to state his own role as patron for Philemon, who was indebted to Paul for his salvation by the rules of reciprocity.
