Introduction

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. This short series is for anyone asking the question:

Am I in the right job – or does God have something else in mind for me?

Let me assure you right away: this isn’t a call to leave your job and become a pastor or missionary. That’s not the path for 99% of us, and it’s not what this series is about.

Instead, we’ll look at how your work–whatever it is–can align with God’s purpose for your life. Because the truth is, God uses people in every field, not just in ministry. Whether you’re in sales, healthcare, engineering, construction, delivery, or at home raising children, God cares deeply about what you do and how you do it.

These readings are based on the book “How to be a Christian at Work” and the God & Work workshops that we offer. They include stories from my life, insights from Scripture, and practical questions to help you reflect.

Let me start by sharing a bit of my own journey.

I began in engineering, jumped through jobs across North America and Europe, and eventually became a VP at a major company. Sounds impressive, right?

But then God gently tapped me on the shoulder.

I realized I was giving more of myself to the company than to my family or God. I didn’t want to be the guy who lost everything by climbing the wrong ladder. So I made a big change. I started my own company, then later joined my wife in running a healthcare clinic. We had no experience in that field – it just felt like the right next step.

Was it God’s will? At times, I wasn’t sure. From the world’s view, some of my decisions didn’t make much sense. But looking back, I can see how God led us, step by step. Even when I didn’t have a master plan, God was still writing the story.

That’s often how He works.

Like a sailor adjusting to shifting winds, we must learn to change course as the Spirit leads. You might have a career goal in mind, but God may be calling you to a different destination.

The good news? God’s plan is better than yours – even if it doesn’t look like it at first.

Then, as you begin, don’t rush through the series or the handouts. Take your time, and hear what God may be saying to you. And, as you seek to hear God’s voice, remember that there’s no single “correct” answer that fits everyone, so be like the prophet Elijah and listen carefully, for God may be saying something to you.
