There is a story in the Bible about King David making a series of terrible choices: taking advantage of a woman who wasn’t his wife, getting her pregnant, and having her husband killed in battle so he wouldn’t know what David did to her. At the time, David couldn’t see how bad his choices were. Thankfully, his friend and prophet Nathan came to see him to help him get it. Nathan told him a story about a wealthy farmer with lots of sheep who took the one and only sheep that belonged to a nearby poor farmer. When David heard it, he was outraged! How could that wealthy farmer do that? Nathan responded to David by saying, “You are that man!” David couldn’t see that he had done something bad in his own life, but when Nathan told the story, David’s eyes were opened. He saw what he couldn’t see before: the ways he had wronged the woman, Bathsheba, and her husband. This psalm is a kind of prayer for us to have the same kind of experience with God’s Word. The writer asks that our eyes may be opened. In other words, it’s a prayer asking that we not fool ourselves into staying in darkness or delusion. It’s asking that we might see ourselves and our choices as they are and God and His character as they are. It’s a prayer for insight and wisdom, and the truth is, we could all use that.
This week, spend some time praying and asking God to use the wisdom in Scripture to open your eyes to what you may not be seeing about yourself or your choices.

Did you know the Bible is the best-selling book of all time? Why is the Bible so popular? Why do people keep picking it up? There’s so much more to be found in the pages of Scripture when we experience it the way it was intended. It’s more than just an ancient book written by ancient people. It’s a book designed to connect us to the God who gave it to us in the first place. And that is ultimately what makes it a bestseller!
