Battles are meant to be won.
Let’s start today with an idea: battles are meant to be won, and dragons are meant to be slain.
The dragons I’m speaking of are not literal flying beasts with wings, scales, and fire, but the metaphor of the predators and foes that seek to ravage our lives appears all through Scripture.
Think for a moment of the story of David and Goliath. Goliath’s sheer size and power were enough to keep an entire army paralyzed in fear.
God didn’t grant David a half-victory over Goliath. It was as complete and emphatic as a victory can be—David removed Goliath’s head.
Complete victory.
That’s the point I'm emphasizing.
These days, we often discuss process and journey. We use phrases like, “I’m just going through a season,” “I’m learning to accept that part of who I am,” and “This is something I will always battle with my entire life.”
Sometimes, we adopt labels and phrases to describe ourselves, and instead of writing in pencil, we tattoo these labels in permanent ink.
Identifying trauma, root issues, and emotional problems in our lives is healthy. I’ve had moments of insight where I finally understood a part of who I am. Self-discovery matters.
But we have to wrestle the tension of self-discovery with spiritual victory. Despite every label I could attach to my identity, I must remember that as a child of God, I am created to win every battle that comes my way.
This is a crucial caveat, so I don’t want you to miss this. Amidst our acceptance of the process and modern skill in articulating our traumas, we mustn't forget the age-old faith posture of living with victory in Christ.
Why engage in a battle we never intend to win?
Life shouldn't be viewed as a boxing match with endless rounds, where every waking moment feels like a struggle, with no reprieve on the horizon. The victory bell never sounds.
Have we lost confidence in the Holy Spirit, doubting our ability to fight for total victory in our lives?
Overcoming is a faith attitude. Believe it today—with God, I can win every battle.
I am an overcomer!
