Flawed Views of Work: Part III
In the book, “Your Work Matters to God,” the authors discuss three flawed views of work. The final view is that work is merely a platform for evangelism.
Jeff Comment, former CEO of Helzberg Diamonds, discovered that his top performing store had a dramatic sales decline. When Jeff asked his team why, someone said, “That’s Jim’s store. He used to be the best until he found the Lord. Now all he does is evangelize.”
Jeff rebuked this store manager and informed him that how well he sold jewelry was also important to God.
Colossians 3:23 teaches, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord....”
Your true authority in your workplace is not your manager or CEO. Ultimately, every individual answers to the Lord for their efforts. If you struggle to find purpose or motivation, remember you are working to honor the Lord, and he can see and will take account of everything you have poured forth for his sake.
Your work is necessary; otherwise, the Lord would have set you to do something else. God’s heart is for evangelism, but He also desires you to work as working for the Lord.
Questions For Reflection
- What do you love about your job? How could you improve your company? How would your company thriving glorify the Lord?
- Where else could you evangelize? Are you involved in any outreach programs? Should you start one?
