We Aren't Everyone
Do you know when we said to our mothers, as children, "Ah, but everyone does it" and she told us that we weren't everyone? Well... that's exactly what Israel did here in today's verse. Good parents are not seduced by this argument that their children use. They want their children to live up to their own potential, without imitating "everyone else" who does this or that.
The Israelites were tired of their calling. They wanted to relax and live like the people of other nations, without the burden of being the Lord's chosen people. But God swears he wouldn't let that happen. He would remain strict, even putting the Israelites through other wilderness experiences to purify them, but he refuses to allow them to conform to the world around them.
Today we can take this verse for ourselves. We are not everyone. We cannot take our shape from the world around us. We are here but we are not from here. We need to make a difference and be different from what we see and hear. People need to look at us and feel the desire to know the Jesus we serve. Remember: we are not everyone. And today, it is God himself who tells us this.
