Day 9 | People-centred workers

Reflection

Have you ever done the Myers-Briggs personality test? Whether you’re a mega-fan or a super-skeptic, it was developed to give people insights into how they work, learn, and relate to others. For example, you might be an ENFP, an imaginative motivator; an INTP, an objective analyst; or, like me, an ESFJ, a supportive contributor.

Whatever your personality type or working style, we’re all designed to be workers. We’re made in the image of God, and he’s a worker. But what type of worker is he? And how does this shape the way we work and find purpose in our work?

From the beginning of time, God’s been a relational worker. There is one, true God, but in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Since the beginning of time, they’ve worked together in perfect harmony. Humankind and all creation were born out of this relationship of love. And we’re called to reflect God’s relational character as we go about our daily tasks.

What does this look like? Well, we’re to be people-centred workers, loving those we work for, with, and among. Relationships with our colleagues, customers, and clients are not tangential parts of our work – they’re a way for us to point to the perfect relationship of our triune, creator God with himself and with us. And, through these relationships, we can mould the culture of our homes, companies, and organisations to look more like heaven.

And, wonderfully, we don’t do this alone. We’re not only working for a relational God but with him, too. So, as we speak with kindness rather than criticism, combat cliques by eating lunch with the office outlier, chat with newbies, and refrain from backstabbing chat about management, we fulfil our God-given purpose to make our workplaces more like heaven, with Jesus by our side.

Father, Son, and Spirit may I reflect your relational workmanship today. Help me prioritise relationships and to bring your kingdom to my workplace. Amen.
