On Purpose: A Lent Devotional Journeyنموونە

Day 25 | Making music
Reflection
Before the world began, God knew where you would be right now – where you would be while reading or listening to this verse.
David, the writer of this psalm, knew that God was with him all the time and knew his every move. It’s likely that David sung and played to his sheep as he sat out on the hillsides. His creativity in the quiet moments expressed his love for God, and in his creative leisure time he crafted many beautiful and insightful psalms, many expressing the raw realities of his life. For thousands of years, God’s people have been blessed by how David spent his leisure time. David’s creativity wasn’t just valuable because he shared it, but because it echoed the creativity of God. It reflected the image of God breathed into him.
In the same way, when we create or play, we echo the creativity and joy of our creator. When we rest, we obey God’s command.
We see this as a good way of life, modelled by the trinity in the creation story, and later in the biblical narrative, modelled by Jesus. Jesus sat at the table with his friends, enjoying food and companionship. Sitting, eating, drinking, and talking. He spent time with the ones he loved.
We were made to work and made to enjoy our rest, friendships, and creativity. We were made to be both people of work and people of leisure. We can live purposefully for God in our leisure activities. God meets us and works through us in both. How will you use your leisure time this Lent?
Jesus, please help me to recognise your work in my creativity, in my rest, and in my play. Thank you that in these things I can honour you and enjoy life with you. Amen.
