The seven lampstands are a symbol of the seven churches of Asia minor to whom John is writing. He is addressing different issues in these churches but also encouraging them to remain faithful as we will read in the coming days. The message to these churches sets up the plot for the storyline of Revelation: will Jesus’ people endure and inherit the New Creation?

The apocalypse ("uncovering" in Greek) that John receives reveals the nature of the world as it is and will one day be. Amidst all of the cosmic imagery is a Lamb and its army who conquer through the power of sacrificial love.
