Schedule with the gospel
One of the reasons that so many Christians are stressed, overwhelmed, and weary is that we pack our schedules with too many things. And one of the reasons that we pack our schedules with too many things is that we crave people’s approval.
Isn’t that true? We say yes to that invitation, that party, that opportunity, that ask, that sign-up sheet, that event, that promotion, that travel team, that tournament, etc., because we don’t want to disappoint people. We want to be there for them, to help them out, and to get their approval. While not bad in itself, that attitude can lead us to overextending ourselves and ignoring the bodies that God has entrusted to us, especially their frequent need for sleep and rest.
But how do you cut back, knowing that some will be disappointed in you? You schedule with the gospel. You remember that you have God’s approval through the death and resurrection of his Son, a Father who takes “great delight in you” and “will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17). Meditate on God’s face shining upon you because of Christ. Let his approval fill up your heart and satisfy your soul.
That will enable you to schedule your own sanity, saying yes to the most important things and no to most other things. Not everyone will approve of your choices, but Jesus will give you all the heavenly approval you truly need.
