Introduction

Jacob and his family prepare to relocate to Egypt. Today’s reading lists the names of the family members who accompanied Jacob. They are listed according to the offspring of each of Jacob’s four wives.

[God said to Jacob:] “I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go to Egypt; I will make your descendants a great nation there.”

Reflect

While Jacob offers sacrifices to God, God speaks to him in a vision (verses 2-4). What does God promise Jacob? These verses recall the promise God made earlier to Jacob when Jacob left Beersheba for Haran (Genesis 28:15). God promises to be with Jacob wherever he goes. In what ways do you sense God’s presence in your life?
