Mark: Living the Way of Jesus in the Worldنموونە

First Thought
From here on through to chapter 8, Mark will recount Jesus’ ministry in and around Galilee. The first action Jesus takes is to call Simon, Andrew, James, and John to follow Him. They weren’t the usual suspects. They weren’t society’s influencers. Nor were they showing promise in religious circles. They were fishermen going about their daily tasks. It was through this flawed group of people who would so often fail to grasp what Jesus was teaching and revealing to them, that God would establish His kingship and rescue others. Doesn’t this give hope! In the day in Capernaum that follows, the disciples quickly get to see Jesus in action. His teaching in the synagogue is followed by a dramatic exorcism, the first miracle Mark records. Then the private healing of Simon’s mother-in-law, and public healings after Sabbath had ended. Jesus is a man with authority, both in His teaching and in His power to drive out evil spirits and to heal. People were amazed.

Responding in Prayer
Merciful God, thank you for calling me to be part of what you’re doing in the world. Despite my flaws and failings, I trust that you can work through me. I’d love you to reveal your authority in my context (…). Amen.
