The Gift of the Father
Acts 1:4, 5
“…Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised…in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit’s presence and empowerment in the life of a believer is an essential gift from our heavenly Father. Gifts are not meant to be feared or avoided, but opened with gratitude. The promise of the Father was an essential part of the Passover meal in every Jewish home. Fifty days after Passover, the Father of every Jewish home would give a gift to the child who found the hidden “afkamen” (middle wafer) during the Passover meal. The gift would be given at the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), exactly the day our Father sent his Spirit to be our counselor, our guide, our teacher and our strength. To be baptized is to be fully immersed and enveloped in the sphere of the Spirit. We must be under the control or influence of the Holy Spirit if we are to live on mission with Jesus.
Jesus, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. You are my teacher and strength today.
