You Don't Have to be Like Her!

Nothing has made me question my identity more than becoming a mother. I love my children dearly, and I knew from a young age I was called to be a mom. Yet, as a young mom with three babies born in four years, I was constantly doubting myself and comparing myself to others.

Many evenings, after putting my kids to bed, I would sit reflecting on the day and scrolling social media, observing what other women were doing. I would wonder: Am I doing enough? I should enjoy playing more with my kids. Why did I lose my patience today? I should try this new idea. Why can’t I be more like her?

I didn’t even realize I was comparing myself to other military wives I interacted with throughout my day. I was left feeling discouraged and doubting that I was enough to fulfill the role God called me to in raising my children.

Maybe you have felt this when interacting with your neighbors as the kids play on your street. Perhaps there is a twinge of jealousy or discouragement as you browse online military mom groups. Maybe you felt this as you moved to a new duty station, meeting women for the first time and feeling like you just don’t measure up.

You are not alone. The Bible is full of people God called, equipped, and used for His purpose. Yet they often doubted their abilities and felt unworthy compared to those around them.They often felt too young and ill-equipped to do what God called them to. Yet, God assures they are created for a unique purpose, not through their strength but through God’s strength alone.

Military wife, you don’t have to be like anyone else. Colossians 1 reminds us that all things in Heaven and Earth were created by God on purpose, including you! This means you don’t need to compare yourself to anyone else, because God created you uniquely with the gifts you need for the purpose He has for you alone. He is at work in you to magnify these gifts for His glory!

You are made in the image of our Holy, wise, and beautifully loving Heavenly Father. You bear His identity, and have been made fearfully and wonderfully. When we can believe this truth deeply, our value comes not from comparing ourselves to others, but from bringing God glory and making His name known.

There is no greater truth we can speak into you than the Word of God. Take some time today to delight in who He is and who He created you to be.
