BEYOND THE REFLECTION
Devotional:
We all have a mirror. Some use it to fix their image; others to point out flaws no one else notices. But there are deeper mirrors than glass—mirrors that reflect how we see ourselves. Sadly, many of us have learned to look at ourselves through comparison, criticism, or rejection. Without noticing, we start believing our reflection is worth less than what God sees.
The psalmist wrote, “You formed my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13). What a picture: God didn’t assemble you in a rush—He knit you. Every thread was woven with purpose. Even the parts you don’t like were shaped by a God who doesn’t err. The enemy tries to convince you otherwise—he wants you to see your life as a rough draft. But God doesn’t work with sketches; He crafts masterpieces.
In Ephesians 1:4–6, Paul says we were chosen “before the foundation of the world to be holy and without fault in His eyes.” In other words, your value isn’t about your results—it’s about your origin. You were loved before you had form. Called before you had a name. Accepted before you ever failed.
Still, we’re surrounded by messages that distort the reflection:
- “If your body doesn’t meet the standard, you’re not enough.”
- “If you don’t hit milestones by a certain age, you’re behind.”
- “If they don’t applaud, you don’t matter.”
The Gospel tears those lies down. God looks at you like One who sees gold inside clay. Where you see a scar, He sees a redemption story. Where you see ruins, He sees an altar. Where you see weakness, He sees purpose.
When the prophet Samuel went to anoint a king, he assumed the choice would look kingly. But God said, “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). That’s the difference between the world’s gaze and God’s. The world watches your exterior; God sees what’s eternal.
See yourself through your Creator’s eyes. You’re not a mistake, a copy, or a failed attempt. You are the result of divine intention. Every part of you was thought out in love—even the parts you would change. When you learn to see yourself as God sees you, you begin to walk in freedom. You stop living to prove and start living to give thanks. You stop chasing approval and start sharing purpose.
God invites you to look “beyond the reflection”—not with eyes of comparison, but with eyes of everlasting love. Trade the world’s mirror for the mirror of His Word. When you see yourself from heaven’s view, you stop obsessing over what’s missing and start celebrating who you were called to be.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for forming me with intention and love. Forgive me for doubting my worth or comparing myself to others. Help me see with Your eyes and embrace the identity You gave me. Teach me to guard my mind and heart from the enemy’s lies. Today I accept my reflection as a work in progress guided by Your hands. Amen.
