Extraordinary Christmas: 25-Day Advent Devotionalনমুনা

From Ordinary To Extraordinary
By Hannah Bolden
“On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’ ‘Woman, why do you involve me?’ Jesus replied. ‘My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’ They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, ‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.’ What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.”—John 2:1–11 (NIV)
“Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.”—1 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)
At a wedding in Cana, something ordinary became extraordinary. When the wine ran out, Mary didn’t panic; she turned to Jesus. Even when He replied, “My hour has not yet come,” she remained confident in who He was. Her simple words to the servants—“Do whatever He tells you”—show a quiet, steady faith that expects God to move.
Jesus could’ve let the moment pass, but instead He chose to reveal His glory. He asked the servants to fill large stone jars (ordinary vessels) with water. As they obeyed, the water transformed into wine, and not just any wine... the best wine. This was Jesus’ first recorded miracle, a sign of His power to take what’s common and make it new, full, and overflowing with purpose.
That same miracle-working power is still at work today. Just like the empty jars, our lives can feel ordinary, worn out, or used up. But when we bring them to Jesus and trust Him fully, He fills us with something better than we could ever imagine: His Spirit, His joy, and His peace.
In 1 Corinthians 5:7, the apostle Paul reminds us that Jesus is our Passover Lamb, the one who removes the old and makes us new. The wine at Cana points to a deeper transformation that happens in every heart that believes in Him.
When life feels empty or the timing doesn’t make sense, remember Mary’s faith and Jesus’ power. He’s always on time, and what He provides will always be better than what we thought we lost.
Put It To Practice: Sabbath
The Sabbath is all about intentional rest. God established the Sabbath after finishing His work of creation, and He commanded us to keep the Sabbath holy as a set apart experience of resting in Him. Everyone rests differently! Whatever it may look like for you, practice Sabbath this weekend by doing something that brings you joy and honors God. Try memorizing Luke 22:42 (NIV), “Not my will, but yours be done.”
For the Family
Today’s Main Idea: Jesus can take the ordinary parts of our lives and make them extraordinary.
Ask Together:
- How did Mary show she trusted Jesus, even before seeing the miracle?
- What’s one “ordinary” thing in your life that you can ask Jesus to use for something special?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for not only sending Jesus to us, but also ensuring that His miracles were documented so thousands of years later, we don’t forget all He’s done. I pray that this week we’ll put our trust in Jesus just as Mary did and understand that You’ll surprise us in unexpected ways. Amen.
