Signal Fire - 1 Thessalonians

DAY 12 OF 29

Paul can hardly find words to describe his gratitude to God for the Thessalonians. He says their faith brings him joy in God’s presence, and he longs to see them face-to-face. His biggest prayer is that he could return to them and help supply what is still lacking in their faith. Paul isn’t criticizing them—he’s celebrating what God has already done in their lives while also recognizing that there’s always room to grow. His love for them shows up not just in thankfulness, but in a desire to keep walking with them as they take their next steps in following Jesus.

The main thought here is that gratitude and growth go hand in hand. Paul shows us that we can be deeply thankful for how far someone has come in their faith while also encouraging them toward what’s next. None of us ever “arrives”—there’s always more God wants to do in us. Real love means both celebrating progress and investing in continued growth. This reminds us to thank God for the people in our lives, not just for what they mean to us, but for how their faith brings joy to God Himself.

Questions to think about:

  • Who in my life can I thank God for today because of their faith?
  • Do I tend to focus more on people’s shortcomings, or on how far they’ve already come?
  • What “next steps” might God be inviting me to take in my own growth right now?
  • How can I invest in helping supply what may still be lacking in someone else’s faith?

About this Plan

Signal Fire - 1 Thessalonians

"Signal Fire" is a devotional through 1 Thessalonians, showing how our lives are meant to shine as indicators of God’s love. Like a fire seen from a distance, faith that is lived out brings direction, warmth, and hope. Paul celebrates the Thessalonians because their faith, love, and endurance became a signal fire to others, spreading well beyond their city. This devotional invites us to tend the flame God has placed in us, so our everyday lives point people to Jesus and burn brightly with the hope of His return.
