The Life of Jesus Pt. 3 – Making Disciplesনমুনা

Fishing For Men – Expedition Two
We’re following the first six fishing-for-men expeditions of Jesus—each one intentional. Do you remember why? His purpose was twofold: to train the ministry team and to reach the masses. While yesterday’s outreach was structured and visible, today’s may surprise you.
After healing a demon-possessed man in the synagogue, news of Jesus spread quickly throughout Galilee (Mark 1:28). From there, Jesus leaves the synagogue in Capernaum and heads to Peter’s house. Yes—Peter had a house and was married. Take a look.
Questions from your reading
- Where is Jesus fishing?
- Who is Jesus fishing for?
- What is Jesus modelling about fishing for people in a house setting?
- How is Jesus fishing?
- What other questions do you still have?
Reflecting on your reading
Today’s setting is Peter’s home—an entirely different kind of fishing expedition. This one begins after sunset and happens in response to word spreading about Jesus’ authority, power and message. People bring the sick and the demon-possessed, crowding the house. The previous outreach took place in a synagogue—this one happens in a disciple’s home. Two very different contexts for sharing the Good News.
Another key difference is that this outreach appears spontaneous and likely stretched long into the night. Yet notice again—Jesus does not heal everyone or cast out every spirit (Mark 1:34). Why not?
Although Jesus may have desired to heal every person he encountered, he only did what the Father allowed. He said and did what the Father told him to say and do. There were moments when healing would not bring the Father as much glory as the endurance of suffering. That’s hard to accept, especially when someone we love is facing illness. But Jesus understood—it’s about the Father’s glory, not just earthly comfort. Every person Jesus healed eventually died. Healing was never the final goal—glory was.
Now look at what happens the next morning. What does Jesus do, and when does he do it (Mark 1:35)? After a full night of ministry, Jesus rises early and slips away to spend time alone with the Father. This wasn’t a rare moment—it was his rhythm. He regularly withdrew to be with the Father, to listen, to receive next steps, and simply to commune with him (Luke 5:16). Do you share this passion to know the Father and be with him?
Eventually, the disciples come searching. They’re eager to ride the momentum. “Everyone is looking for you!” they say. But Jesus shocks them—he says no. It’s time to move on and preach elsewhere. How did he know? He’d just spent time with the Father. Jesus wasn’t following the crowd’s demands—he was following the Father’s lead.
This is a vital principle. As you plan ministry or outreach, begin with the Father. Don’t just ask him to bless your plans after they’re made. Let him lead from the beginning. He delights in being included in every part—not added on at the end.
Applying what you’ve read
Jesus loved getting away to be with the Father—to hear his voice, receive direction, and simply enjoy his presence. What about you? Do you prioritise that space with God? This rhythm of intimacy is essential for your walk with Christ.
As you talk with your group today, reflect honestly on the challenges of maintaining this practice in a noisy world. The enemy will try anything to pull you away from time with your Father—don’t let him win.
If you haven’t yet chosen a date for your fishing expedition, now is the time. Soak the planning in prayer. Ask the Father to reveal who he’s calling you to reach and who should join the team. Pray for them—and involve them in preparing the expedition.

About this Plan

As the ministry grows, Jesus issues his next call: “‘Come, follow me’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’” (Mark 1:17) It is the third call. It is made to those he has already called: “Come and see” and “Follow Me.” This third call is to come closer to Jesus, to draw near enough so he can now teach you how you can be a part of the process of making disciples.
