True & Beautiful Things About the Bible--New Testament

DAY 20 OF 30

The Letter to the Hebrews: He's Worth It

Is it really worth it? Is Jesus worth the price?

Christians in the mid-first century paid a steep price for following Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Many lost their careers, their homes, some were cut off from family, and many more knew they’d soon lose their lives.

Everyone had a story to tell. Beyond just sad or exhausted, many were afraid. Something evil was going on, and no one would blame them for backpedaling on their faith. Maybe we should just go back to our old life. Maybe that would be better.

Then these drowning believers got this letter, addressed only to “the Hebrews.” No name or return address, but they certainly knew and trusted the sender. Perhaps the anonymity protected them both.

This letter, one of the most profound, yet true and realistic messages for this new season, took them into deeper water than they had ever gone before—deeper into the things of God. But the beautiful truth gave this generation a place to stand—it gave them a bridge over troubled water.

Surprisingly, the letter said nothing about their current political crisis or if they’d ever get their homes, their jobs, or their reputations back. Instead, it gave them what they needed to remember about Jesus. He’s everything you hoped He would be. No, in fact, He’s better. Better than your old way of life—better than prophets, or angels, or Moses. He’s more than enough to fill your empty hands. That’s what these chapters said.

Every generation faces fears like these. What this first-century generation learned, let us also take to heart.

You can lose everything in this world and not even be sorry. And when you cross the thin divide between this reality and the next, you can walk into heaven with your head high, not stunned or silenced, or even limping. Instead, your eyes will be bright, fixed on your reward—on Jesus, and on Him alone. Picture that on a hard day.

It must be said that the hero of Hebrews is always Jesus (look for Him in Hebrews 12:1), but the “cloud of witnesses,” the ones God calls “whom the world wasn’t worthy,” are heroes, too. Spanning the Old Testament, the list of their names prompts stories of faith even as they followed the Lord under the most severe circumstances.

So, the answer to the question is, yes, it’s worth it because He’s worth it. Every wound. Don’t stop now—keep following, that’s what the cloud of witnesses shouts to us today.

Someday soon, your faith will be sight. You’ll see Jesus. And He’s worthy.

One look will tell you, no price was too high.
