Crave Pure Spiritual Milk
So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
1 Peter 2:1-3 ESV
In order to grow in Christ, we must be done with the old habits and sinful living that separate us from him. We put to death the wickedness in our own hearts, flattery and lies, hypocrisy, hateful jealousy, and defamation. We pray that instead of attracting us, these sins will now repel us. And what draws our attention now, what we crave, like a baby craves milk, is the Word of God. What a gracious trade-off. A baby’s desire for milk is intense and often. Nothing short of milk will satisfy. We can think of spiritual milk as God’s special revelation given to us in the Bible. We should feed on the written Word and commune with the living Word, Jesus Christ.
So what happens when we don’t desire the word or we fail to receive it? We end up malnourished, sickly, ignorant, and often complaining about the very condition we have brought upon ourselves. How can we truly know God if we don’t study him? This is a problem for many Christians whose growth and flourishing are stunted simply because they haven’t taken up the mandate to taste and see that the Lord is good. Read it and know it, that you may grow up into salvation!
