The Christian and Culture

DAY 4 OF 5

Day 4: Pentecost and Cultural Restoration

At Pentecost, once more the Lord came down — but now to restore. The Spirit fell on the disciples in Jerusalem, and people from many nations heard the wonders of God in their own languages. The miracle was not unity that flattens difference but diversity reconciled: each people and culture hearing the same good news through its own voice.

This event links inseparably to the Incarnation. The eternal Word became flesh and entered our history, speaking our language. In Christ, God does not merely speak to us; He dwells with us. At Pentecost that incarnational presence is extended by the Spirit into the Church. The mission of the Church is incarnational: we live within time and culture, rendering the Gospel intelligible and believable in each context.

Pentecost teaches that God’s purpose is not the erasure of identity but its redemption. The Gospel does not eliminate cultures; it reforms and raises them. Every language, artistic form, scientific advance, or political practice may serve to display the Creator’s glory when it is submitted to Christ.

This vocation calls for attentive cultural engagement. Like Paul in Athens, the Christian learns to recognize fragments of truth in the surrounding culture and to point them toward their fulfillment in Christ. In every people and in every mode of expression, God makes room for the Gospel to be heard in living, contextual ways. As Abraham Kuyper put it: “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’’” The Kingdom of God embraces and transforms every culture under Christ’s lordship.

Today, pray that the Holy Spirit will teach you to live faithfully within your culture, using your gifts, voice, and creativity to translate the wonders of God for those around you. Pray that cultural diversity may become for you a sign of Christ’s redeeming grace in the world.

About this Plan

The Christian and Culture

We were created in the image of the Creator, and our vocation extends far beyond mere survival. We are called to cultivate the earth and to develop every expression of culture—science, technology, art, and more. Scripture shows that sin has distorted this calling: our creativity can either mirror God’s glory or become an instrument of destruction. The Gospel restores humanity’s mission, sending us into the world to manifest beauty, truth, and justice. In this devotional, we reflect on how Christian faith can shape every creative act, turning culture itself into a stage where God’s glory is revealed.
