Reimagine Encouragement Through the Life of Barnabas

DAY 1 OF 5

A Name That Defines a Life

If someone were to give you a nickname based on your most consistent character trait, what would it be? Would it reflect something you’re proud of? Or something you’d rather not have highlighted?

In Acts 4, the early church was navigating extraordinary challenges. Persecution was increasing, needs were growing, and the community was expanding at an astonishing rate. In this pressure-packed moment, Luke introduces us to a man whose very name captured what the church needed most: Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement.” (Acts 4:36, NIV) Originally named Joseph, this Levite from Cyprus had developed such a reputation for uplifting others that the apostles gave him a new name to reflect it. Think about that—his encouragement was so steady, so notable, so essential to the community that it reshaped his identity.

Barnabas didn’t just encourage with words—he followed through with action. When the church had financial needs, he sold a field and brought the proceeds to the apostles. He didn’t just say, “I’ll pray for you” or “Hang in there.” He gave sacrificially to meet real needs. His encouragement was both genuine and costly.

Barnabas’s presence lifted people’s spirits. His words built others up. His actions strengthened the community. People knew that when Barnabas showed up, they would leave more hopeful, more valued, and better prepared for the road ahead.

Our world still needs encouragers whose presence makes burdens lighter and hope more tangible, men and women whose words breathe life and whose generosity brings real help.

Here’s the good news: encouragement is within reach for all of us. You don’t need a platform, a title, or a big bank account. What you do need is intentionality—a daily commitment to speak life, to lift burdens, and to notice those who feel unseen.

Barnabas teaches us that encouragement is both an art and a discipline. It takes attention to notice others’ needs, creativity to find ways to bless them, and the willingness to sacrifice for someone else’s good.

What would it take for you to become so marked by encouragement that people gave you a nickname to match? What would need to shift in your daily rhythms or relationships for encouragement to become your default mode?

The beautiful truth is that encouragement is a choice—one we can make again and again until it shapes us into the people God designed us to be.

Reflection Questions:

  1. If people were to give you a nickname based on your most consistent character trait, what would it be?
  2. What opportunities do you have this week to encourage someone who needs it?

Prayer:
Lord, make me a son or daughter of encouragement. Help me combine uplifting words with generous actions that truly bless others. Shape my character to reflect Your heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
