Words of Comfort, Hope and Joyনমুনা

Since the Lord is the ultimate source of happiness and goodness for the Psalmist, he declares, “I have no good apart from you” (Psalm 16:2). Following this opening statement, the Psalmist elaborates on the goodness of the Lord that he experiences.
The Psalmist presents two scenarios to illustrate his relationship with the Lord. The first involves celebrating with friends and family. In ancient Israel, it was customary for the host or head of the household to send some portions of his food to those he loved most. When Joseph was feasting with his brothers, he sent portions from his table to them. “Portions were taken to them from Joseph's table, but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him” (Genesis 43:34, ESV). Similarly, when Elkanah dined with his wives, he would give Hannah a double portion to confirm her his love (1 Samuel 1:5).
The godly person elevates this metaphor from a simple gathering with fine food and drink to a righteous life with the Lord. Each day becomes a celebration with the Lord and a moment of reassurance that he loves and cares for us.
The second metaphor involves dividing land within the tribe or family. Lines are measuring tools used to measure the land. The quality of the land, its fertility, and the availability of water sources determine a person's destiny on Earth. Living in a barren land where nothing grows for the rest of one’s life is miserable.
Nonetheless, the Psalmist is more than satisfied with everything the Lord has provided. He is jubilant to describe them as “pleasant places” and “beautiful inheritance.” He has no reason to complain because the Lord is the source of his joy, and he cannot find anyone better than the Lord, who is already his portion.
The Word encourages us to recognize the goodness of the Lord and to rejoice in what he has bestowed upon us: “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him” (Psalms 34:8, ESV).
Today is a fantastic opportunity to embrace the countless blessings and goodness that God has generously poured into your life. Celebrate his boundless love, cherish his comforting presence, and express heartfelt thanks for being your ultimate source of joy and fulfilment. Let your heart choose to trust him wholeheartedly and rejoice in his greatness, knowing that his grace is always available to uplift and inspire you.
