Dating with Discernment

In today’s passage, Paul is writing to the church in Corinth, a community of believers living in a very worldly and morally complicated city. Corinth was full of idol worship, sexual immorality, and cultural practices that clashed with Christian faith. Paul wanted the believers there to understand that their close relationships with friends, partnerships, or marriages would deeply impact their spiritual lives. That’s why he used the farming image of being “yoked” together: two animals tied under one yoke must walk in the same direction, or they’ll stumble and get stuck.

Dating in college often feels like it’s all about chemistry, attention, or comfort, but Scripture reminds us it’s actually much deeper than that. When you date someone, you’re tying part of your life to theirs. If they’re walking in a completely different direction spiritually, it will eventually pull you off course. It may seem small now, but values and faith always show up in the long run, especially when it comes to making decisions, setting boundaries, or facing challenges. Discernment is important because it protects your walk with God. True love should always strengthen your faith.
