A Disciple's Journey

DAY 4 OF 35

Why does Christ call us?

One thing you may be wondering about at this point is—why does Jesus call us at all? Wouldn’t it be more efficient for Him just to do the work of the ministry Himself? Why does He involve a bunch of misfits and outcasts like us to do it?

We get a little bit of insight into this in Mark 3, verses 13–15. The text says, “And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons.” We see three reasons why Jesus calls disciples here.

Reason #1: It was His desire

First, Jesus calls “those whom he desires.” Why does He want these twelve men? The answer is simple—because He wants these twelve men. Why did he call you to follow him? Because He wanted YOU to follow Him. This gets into a mystery at the very heart of God, in the center of His will, one that we can never really explain but can only receive with gratitude. He chose these twelve apostles because He wanted to. It was His choice and His good pleasure to call them. He chose you because He wanted to. It was His will to call you to Himself. As Jesus reminded His disciples in John 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you…” And as John says in 1 John 4:19, “We love because he first loved us.”

About this Plan

A Disciple's Journey

Before going on a difficult journey, you need to have a plan. You also need to find people headed to the same destination, so you can encourage each other, train together, and prepare for what lies ahead. That is what A Disciple’s Journey is designed to provide. Each week, you will follow along with the apostle Peter in his journey of discipleship. With each step of his journey, we can find resonances with our own and wisdom for how to navigate the Christian life.
