Day 11 Psalm 119: 73–80 Crafted by the Potter
In the tenth section of Psalm 119, “Yodh,” gives us hints about what this section of verses is all about. God’s craftsmanship is the central focus. While "yodh" itself means "hand" in Hebrew, the letter also symbolizes God's creative power, as seen in verse 73: "Your hands have made me and fashioned me".
David, when he wrote Psalm 139, acknowledged God’s handiwork from inception. One of the overarching themes of Psalm 119, highlights God's role in both creation (as told in Genesis) and a purpose through trials by using trials to refine and teach.
Recently, I witnessed clay pottery in the making. The demonstration was easy enough to understand. When the potter wanted to create a different shape, he would simply move his hands in specific places. The clay yielded like soft putty in his hands.
The pliability of the clay reminded me that God’s Word is instructional, teaching me to listen to His voice, learn from Him, and obey His guidance with a willing heart. This section also highlights the hope found in His Word, a source of comfort and strength in times of difficulty.
“Yodh” is the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet, yet has a greater significance. It symbolizes how God uses even the seemingly insignificant to accomplish His purposes. It’s also the first letter in the Hebrew name for Jesus (Yeshua), further connecting the letter to divine significance and redemption.
This letter can also be connected to the Holy Spirit's role in guiding, comforting, and revealing God's truth in our lives. Interestingly, this letter can also represent a hand reaching toward heaven in prayer, or a person humbly bowing down in prayer, representing humility.
Again, while I watched the potter expertly shape the clay, I thought of how we are God’s workmanship, created to obey, do good works, and be shaped by life’s trials. We can hope in God’s Word, be strengthened by His unfailing love, and comforted by His promises. Surrounded by His tender mercies, we find delight in His instructions.
As we submit to the Potter’s hand, we humbly surrender our control and are shaped by His commandments. In this way, we will lead a blameless life.
Question: Where do you need God’s shaping touch?
Prayer: God, thank you for refining and shaping us to conform to your likeness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
