Rosh Hashanah - the Shofar's Call and the Messiah's Return

DAY 1 OF 4

The Trumpet's Call (Shofar)

The Feast of Trumpets, known in Judaism as Rosh Hashanah ("Head of the Year"), marks the beginning of the Days of Awe. The Torah commands a day of rest and a remembrance with the blowing of trumpets. On this day, the sound of the shofar, a ram's horn, echoes in synagogues as a solemn call. The sound is an awakening: it pulls us out of our spiritual lethargy and reminds us that God is both King and Judge.

For the Jewish people, the blowing of the shofar is a call to repentance (Teshuvá) and a reminder of their covenant with the Eternal. What not everyone realizes is that, biblically, the sound of the trumpet always recalls or precedes a great divine event—whether the revelation of the Law on Mount Sinai, the fall of the walls of Jericho, or, prophetically, the return of Jesus. The apostle Paul reveals the final fulfillment of this feast, stating that the Lord Himself will descend from heaven "with the trumpet of God" to snatch away His church.

Personal Application: The sound of the shofar is a reminder to be spiritually vigilant. No matter how distracted we may be, there is a call to awaken. How can you respond to this call today? Think of an area in your life where complacency has set in and ask God to awaken you to the reality of His presence and the imminence of His return.

Call to Intercession: Pray that the Jewish people, upon hearing the sound of the shofar, will recognize the prophetic call to the coming of Jesus. May the Messiah, in His second coming, be the answer to Israel's longing.
