The Silent Struggle of Comparisonনমুনা

Imagine receiving a phone call that someone important is coming to visit your home unexpectedly. Your immediate response would likely be, "Let me get ready!" You'd clean, prepare, and ensure everything was in order for their arrival. This natural response reveals something profound about how we should live as believers. Purpose brings clarity to our calling. John the Baptist understood his mission with remarkable precision, reminding his disciples in verse 28: "You yourselves know how plainly I told you, 'I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for him'" (NLT). His statement reveals a profound truth: the evidence of our belief is how we prepare ourselves and others for Jesus.
When we truly believe, we naturally assume a posture of preparation. Jesus' growing ministry didn't threaten John because this was exactly what was supposed to happen; he had been preparing for this moment his entire life. Like someone who calls to say they're coming to pick you up, our response should be immediate: "Let me get ready."
Our calling as believers is to help every person we encounter prepare for Jesus' return. Our mission isn't about showcasing ourselves or building personal kingdoms; it's about living with eternity constantly in mind. Every conversation becomes an opportunity, every relationship a chance to point someone toward Jesus.
Preparation affects everything: how we live, what we prioritize, how we treat others, and where we invest our time and energy. When we embrace our role as preparers of the way, we discover the same joy John experienced, which was genuine fulfillment in seeing others encounter Jesus, regardless of personal recognition.
Second Peter 3:11-12 challenges us with this perspective: "Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along" (NLT).
Today's Challenge: Live today as if Jesus is returning tomorrow. Choose one relationship where you can actively help someone prepare their heart for Jesus, whether through your words, actions, or prayers.
Prayer: Father, help me embrace my role as one who prepares the way for Jesus. Remove any spirit of competition from my heart and give me John's joy in seeing others encounter You. May I live each day preparing myself and others for Your return. In Jesus' name, amen.
