The Attributes of God

DAY 1 OF 5

Day 1
Who Is God?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
– Genesis 1:1 (NLT)

Who is God? That’s a pretty big question. And it’s not exactly a simple answer.

We can learn a lot about who God is from the Bible. God inspired people to write the Bible thousands of years ago, but there’s still so much we can learn from it today.

One thing the Bible tells us about God is that God created everything. The stars, the planets, the oceans, the animals, the trees, and us. The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1 NLT) Then it goes on to say, “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27 NIV)

People—all people—are created in the image of God. We were made to be like Him in many ways. But there are other ways that we are not like God. He is special. He has the power to create everything out of nothing. He is bigger than we can imagine, knows more than we can imagine, and is perfect in every way. And yet God still loves and cares about each of us. He knows all about you and wants you to get to know Him.

God is three persons in one. The Father, the Holy Spirit, and the Son (Jesus) are all God. As we study God’s attributes, keep in mind that all the characteristics we talk about are true for all three. It’s hard to understand how God can be one God and three different persons. God is so big and unique that some things about Him are hard to understand. But He still wants us to get to know Him anyway. And He will help us understand more as we learn and grow in our relationship with Him.

Pastor and author A.W. Tozer once wrote, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” We want what we believe about God to match what God tells us is true about Himself. And that’s the mystery we’re trying to uncover over the next few days.

Reflect: What comes to mind when I think of God?
