Hospitality and the Heart of the Gospel

DAY 4 OF 5

Do Not Forget…Entertaining Angels

If I asked you what word comes to mind when you think about hospitality, the word “angel” is probably not what you thought of! There is a rather startling verse in Hebrews 13:2 that reminds us of the power of hospitality: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares” (ESV). This intriguing verse may spark our imagination and seem far-fetched to our modern-day way of thinking. It would not have seemed strange to ancient Jewish readers, who would have immediately thought back to the stories of Abraham, Lot, and others (Genesis 18-19, Judges 6, 13) who did, indeed, entertain angels.

The focus of this passage is on the blessings that come from hospitality, whether this hospitality is offered to fellow human beings or angels. Hebrews 13:16 urges us not only to be kind in case we meet an angel but also to be kind because it pleases God: “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” (NIV).

As believers, we are called to love one another deeply and show hospitality, even to strangers. This openness might invite unexpected blessings. The key is being ready to receive these blessings through our acts of kindness, which sometimes lead to extraordinary rewards.

Hospitality ties into a broader theme in Hebrews 13: love in action toward strangers, prisoners, our spouses, and leaders. It teaches us to love beyond our comfort zones and put our trust in God for our security, rather than in material wealth. We find the confidence to love generously and bravely in God, as our ultimate hope is found in Him (v. 6).

When we practice hospitality, we’re not merely following a command but embracing a life of faith. Each act of kindness becomes an opportunity to reflect God’s love and serve Him. The message is clear: while hospitality may lead to entertaining angels, our foundational motivation is to live a life of love, knowing that every small act of kindness carries the potential for a blessing.

When we show love to others, whether strangers or friends, we reflect God’s heart and may experience unexpected joy and blessings in return.

Reflect and Act

Is it comfortable or uncomfortable for you to interact with those you don’t know? Can you think of a time when a stranger interacted with you in a way that blessed you?

Take a moment to consider your upcoming day or week. Who are the “strangers” you may come across—in the grocery store, at a sporting event, a fast-food window, or a restaurant—and how might you show them love and kindness? Perhaps you can offer a compliment, a caring question, or a generous tip.

Hospitality and the Heart of the Gospel

When we hear the word "hospitality," images of beautifully set tables, candles, and delicious food might come to mind. But how does the Bible define and describe hospitality? It turns out that hospitality is at the very heart of the Good News of the gospel! Deric Sneller helps us examine the important biblical basis for hospitality and how we can live it out in our lives.
