How Relaxed Do You Look? 💆🤷

When I was a child, a big man named Georges would visit our family regularly. He didn’t call ahead because he didn’t own a phone. He also didn’t have a home where we could visit him. Everything he owned, he carried with him.

And whenever I saw him coming from afar, I would have a nervous excitement every time. It was always something special for my parents to see him, too. At the time, I couldn’t understand it, because what could this man, who owned nothing, possibly bring that was valuable?

Today I understand. Today, as I realize that I’m at an age where my friends my age are thinking, “Have I achieved everything I wanted to in life? Do I have a job, a house, kids? Am I secure? What about my retirement?” 🏠💰

But Georges was different. He lived out what Psalm 49 says:

“Why should I fear when trouble comes, when enemies surround me? They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches.” (Psalm 49:6-7 NLT)

He understood:

“People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish. This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings … Their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions. But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself.” (Psalms 49:12-15 NIV)

And that’s why he tried to help us understand—and to live by it:

“Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases; for they will take nothing with them when they die…” (Psalm 49:16-17 NIV)

Because only when we understand the significance of eternity will we live relaxed with having little or plenty.

Today, I understand why I found the great Georges more impressive than a successful businessman! While a businessman was focused on filling his bank account more and more, Georges worked to fill heaven with more people by doing EVERYTHING he could to introduce them to Jesus!

In my entire life, I’ve never seen even the wealthiest person exude the confidence and security that Georges did. 🤩

Yes, we must understand eternity to live relaxed with little or plenty!
