IMPRESS: A Parent's Guide to Passing on Faith

DAY 7 OF 8

The First S in IMPRESS is for Storytelling

In today’s passage, the disciples ask Jesus why He speaks to the people in parables. Jesus explains that His stories are a way to reveal the secrets of the kingdom of heaven to those who are open and willing to receive them. Though the meanings weren’t always immediately obvious, these stories invited listeners to pause, reflect, and look deeper.

As parents, we can learn so much from Jesus’ approach. Stories have a remarkable ability to capture the imagination, stir the heart, and plant seeds of truth. When we share our faith with our children, storytelling can help make spiritual ideas come alive in ways that teaching alone cannot.

Jesus used parables to explain profound truths in relatable ways and we can do the same. Whether we’re sharing Bible stories, moments from our own lives, or everyday examples, storytelling invites our children into a bigger picture of who God is and how He works in the world. It opens the door to wonder, curiosity, and deeper connection.

Remember, the goal isn’t always to provide every answer but to spark thoughtful conversation and help our children wrestle with what they hear. When we tell stories, we give them space to ask questions, reflect, and begin to see how God’s story intersects with their own.

Action

For You

Choose one of Jesus’ parables to read and reflect on this week. Sit with it slowly. What new insight or challenge might God be offering you through this familiar story?

With Your Kids

Pick a parable of Jesus or a personal story that reflects your faith and share it with your kids. Invite them to ask questions and talk about what they think it means. Help them explore how the story connects to their own life and what it reveals about God’s heart.

About this Plan

IMPRESS: A Parent's Guide to Passing on Faith

We find the word Impress in Deuteronomy 6, where Moses urges God’s people to pass on faith to the next generation. Based on her book Impress, Ainsley Freeman invites us in this reading plan to rediscover how we can leave a lasting faith legacy for our kids. Even in today’s busy homes, we can share God’s story in relevant and engaging ways. Using IMPRESS as an acronym, this plan outlines seven practical principles to help you make passing on faith a clear and compelling priority in your home.
