BibleProject | One Story: Foundations of the Bible

DAY 1 OF 30

Welcome to the Foundations of the Bible reading plan. In 30 sessions, we’ll explore Genesis and Exodus and highlight key patterns found throughout the rest of the biblical story. We’ll begin in the mysterious creation narrative of Genesis 1-3, spending time in the details, because these chapters introduce the foundational pattern that shapes the rest of the story.

In today’s video, notice how God brings order to chaos and forms a place life can flourish—a place where Heaven and Earth overlap. Notice also how rather than creating subjects, God creates humans made in his image, whose purpose is to tend to God’s good world. Instead of forcing this purpose on them, God gives the humans a choice, represented by two trees. To eat from the tree of life is to trust God, but to eat from the other tree is to reject God and the true life he offers.

As you continue this journey, note the moments in the story where you hear echoes of Genesis 1-3. Take time also to reflect on God’s merciful character in the face of humanity’s repeated rebellion. God’s unwavering compassion points to his ultimate desire to restore his image-bearers to their true purpose and bring Heaven to Earth.

Reflection questions:

  • Which aspect of God’s character stands out to you the most? What might you learn about God’s character from the way he instructs humans?
  • Reflect on a time when something you thought was good turned out to be bad. What was the result? What helped bring clarity to the situation?
