Unbroken Fellowship With the Father: A Study of Intimacy in John

DAY 3 OF 5

Pruned for Fruitfulness
Jesus calls Himself the True Vine and the Father the Gardener (John 15:1). Gardeners prune not to punish a plant but to release its full potential. Likewise, “every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful” (John 15:2 NIV). Pruning seasons feel like loss—cut dreams, uncomfortable change, hidden roots exposed. Yet John 15 reminds us that pruning is evidence of the gardener’s commitment, not His absence.

Our mistake is reading circumstances as the scorecard of fellowship. Hard season? God must be angry. Smooth season? God must be pleased. Jesus dismantles that myth. The Father’s shears work in every season, and Romans 8:28 assures that He works all things for good within those who love Him. Instead of withdrawing under pressure, we “remain” (abide) in the vine, trusting the unseen wisdom shaping our branches.

Abiding is not passive. It is an active, trusting yes, to divine love. Jesus repeats the word “remain” eleven times (vv. 4-10). Remain in Me, remain in My words, remain in My love. Fruitfulness flows from fellowship, not frantic effort. When the sap of Christ’s life circulates in us, His character naturally appears: love, joy, peace, patience. This fruit glorifies the Father (v. 8) and answers the world’s ache for something real.

Remember: branches never panic about “producing.” They focus on connection. Are there attitudes—or even good things—that the Gardener is asking to trim? Pruning feels like reduction, yet it makes space for abundance. Lean in. Let the vine’s life surge through fresh cuts.

Next Step – “Pruning Prayer”
Find a quiet spot with a small piece of paper. Ask the Spirit, “Father, show me one branch You are pruning in this season.” Write what comes—an activity, a mindset, a relationship. Then pray aloud, “I remain in Your love. Use this pruning to bear more fruit.” Fold the paper and place it in your Bible at John 15 as a weekly reminder.
